Delta

Course Description

Delta (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is the most prestigious and widely recognised British qualification in English Language Teaching. It is intended for candidates who have substantial experience of teaching English to adult speakers of other languages. The course provides candidates with the opportunity to improve their teaching skills, acquire a deeper understanding of the current principles and practice in English teaching and to examine modern techniques and approaches in ELT.

Entry Requirements

Candidates are expected to have:

  • an international TEFL certificate (CELTA or Trinity Certificate)
  • a minimum two years of full-time post CELTA or Trinity Certificate teaching experience
  • a high standard of spoken and written English and the ability to research and write academic background essays
  • the facility to reflect on classroom practice and provide and accept constructive criticism

Course Structure Overview
There are three Modules and candidates can take any combinations of them. Each Module is assessed independently and is separately certificated.

Module One

Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching
This module looks at the background to teaching and learning and is assessed with a written exam.

Content areas:

  1. Theoretical perspectives on language acquisition and language teaching
  2. Different approaches and methodologies including current developments
  3. Language systems and learners' linguistic problems
  4. Languageskillsandlearners' problems
  5. Knowledge of resources, materials and reference sources for language learning
  6. Key concepts and terminology related to assessment

Module Two

Developing Professional Practice

This module explores professional practice, the knowledge of the elements of planning and preparing a lesson or a sequence of lessons and how to select and use resources and materials. It is assessed with a portfolio of coursework, including observed lessons, background written assignments, and an externally-assessed lesson observation. Please, note that there is no written exam.
Content areas:

  1. The language learner and the language learning context
  2. Preparation for teaching adult learners of English
  3. Evaluating, selecting and using resources and materials for teaching purposes
  4. Managing and supporting learning
  5. Evaluation of lesson preparation and teaching
  6. Observation/evaluation of other teachers' lessons
  7. Professionalism and opportunities for professional development

DELTA Module 2 course overview

DELTA Module 2 is an intensive eight week course with classes from Tuesday to Friday; 9-4pm. Monday is a free day for research and individual work, but tutors will be available to answer questions, look through drafts.
This course is extremely demanding and candidates can only be accepted if they can demonstrate they are fully prepared for the workload.

The DELTA course aims to ensure a balance between the demands of practical application and understanding of the theoretical background. As well as a detailed consideration of key theoretical issues, it includes classroom observation and supervised, evaluated teaching practice.

Module Two involves 100 tutor facilitated hours (input sessions, teaching supervision, feedback, tutorials etc.) and 100 independent learning hours reading and research and assignment writing and lesson planning).


Module Three

Extending practice and English language teaching specialism (20 credits).
Module Three is assessed through an extended written assignment.

This module tests knowledge of classroom management and what happens in the classroom in terms of the language used by the teacher or learners, the roles of the teacher can fulfill and the ways in which the teacher can manage classroom events and interaction.

Content areas:

  • Research into specialist areas
  • Principles of syllabus design and implications for specific learning contexts
  • Designing syllabus and teaching programmes to meet the needs of learners in the specific context of the selected specialism
  • Course design and development in the specific context of the selected specialism
  • The principles and practice of testing and assessment and application to the candidate's specialist area
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and quality of courses and programmes of study

Course Entry Requirements:

Centers are responsible for selecting candidates and should satisfy themselves that candidates have a profile of experience, skills and awareness in ELT that enables them to complete the course and all the assessed elements.
A candidate should normally:

  • Have an international TEFL certificate (e.g. CELTA, Trinity Cert TESOL, IHC);
  • Have a minimum of two years of full time post-CELTA/Trinity Cert TESOL/IHC teaching experience;
  • Have a range of teaching experience involving work in different contexts and experience of teaching candidates at different levels

It is the responsibility of individual centers to ensure that all candidates have an appropriate awareness of language and language competence in English which will enable them to follow the course and complete all the assessed elements successfully.

The course features are:

  • Input sessions providing in-depth coverage of the seven units of the syllabus and guidance on completing the portfolio of assignments
  • Teaching classes of adult learners of English at two different levels for a minimum of 10 hours, of which at least six will be observed by the course tutors (+ feedback).
  • Ten hours of observation of experienced teachers
  • Personalized study plans for background reading and research
  • A portfolio of course work including:
    • A two-part Professional Development assignment, including a reflective assignment and an experimental lesson
    • Two Language Skills Assignments, each including a written assignment and an observed lesson
    • Two Language Systems Assignments, each including a written assignment and an observed lesson
    • One of the Language Systems/Skills Assignments is externally assessed by a Cambridge Delta Assessor
  • Individual progress tutorials with experienced Delta tutors throughout the course

Written Assignments

Candidates complete:

  • a two-part Professional Development Assignment
  • two Language Systems Assignments
  • two Language Skills Assignments

The Professional Development Assignment consists of two parts:
Reflection and Action (2,000 - 2,500 words) and Experimental Practice (2,000 - 2,500 words).

Each Systems Assignment includes:
A background essay (2,000 - 2,500 words) in which a candidates explores an area of language systems and considers related teaching and learning issues.
Planning, teaching and evaluation of a lesson related to the chosen area.
Each Skills assignment includes:
A background essay (2,000 - 2,500 words) in which candidates explore a skills area and considers related teaching and learning issues.
Planning, teaching and evaluation of a lesson related to the chosen area.

Each assignment is marked with reference to a set of assessment criteria.Results are awarded as Pass with Distinction, Pass with Merit, Pass or Fail.

Online course of preparation for DELTA module 1

This online course was specially designed for the teachers, who want to get prepared for Delta Module 1 exam to the maximum extent. This course will provide you with the knowledge of not only theory required for the successful passing of the exam, but also the structure of tasks and strategy for their effective fulfillment. It includes online theory, consulting by Skype, online practical exercises and test exam (with the following detail analysis from tutors).

After completing the course you will get an opportunity to take Delta Module 1 in the authorized examination center Ru053/RU054 (exam taking is paid separately).

Teacher traning centre offers a preparation course for Cambridge Delta Module 3.

The course is offered 100% online so you can study from anywhere. During the 15 weeks of the course we will cover all the components of the Module 3:

1. How to write academic research, how to choose your specialism and how to analyse it properly (3 ach of webinars and 2 ach of tutorials)

2. How to analyse needs of your students and what types of testing are there (2 ach of webinars+2 ach of tutorials)

3. How to write syllabus of your course, how to formulate learning aims for the course, and how to choose appropriate teaching approaches (7 ach of webinars and 3 ach of tutorials)

4. How to assess and evaluate your students and your course (4 ach of webinars and 2 ach of tutorials)

You will be provided with all the necessary books and materials for a successful submission of your written assignment. Your drafts of each of the parts will be checked twice by the tutors before the final submission.

The total count of academic hours: 25 ach including 16 ach of webinars and 9 ach of tutorials.

Webinars are taking place on Sundays at 12:00 Moscow time.
